Rules to abide by when building a Micro-Saas

Following many mistakes and case studies, I’ve gathered a list of ‘not to do’ & ‘todo’ to get you started & focused on your micro-saas.

The list is not exhaustive but it will give you a good starting point to start working on your side hustle to make some cash.

The Rules

  1. If you’re a software developer do not learn a new programming language to build your side hustle. You will exhaust your precious time on learning something new rather than keeping focus on your business.
  2. Don’t re-invent the wheel, if you’re going to need to implement a user authorisation/authentication management system, use an off the shelf product. Firebase, 0auth for authentication, and use pre-built tools within your framework to do the permissions.
  3. Start marketing from day one of your idea and focus on validating the idea before building a product. Marketing your product via blogging / video will help you reach your audience.
  4. Focus on building on existing platforms before spinning off a self hosted application.
  5. Focus on one idea for a minimum of 6 months, don’t swap or give up the idea or audience. Pivot as needed after customer feedback.
  6. Build something you’re going to use where necessary or where you have domain insights. Don’t build something where you have little or no knowledge on, it will take you years to get there.
  7. Follow version 0 of your app guidelines to get you going on application features you need to focus on.
